Intent

The Work-Study Student Mentorship Program (WSMP) is a student-centered financial aid program, dedicated to preparing students for college, supporting them through their educational journey, and equipping them for the workforce. WSMP achieves this by offering work-study eligible college students’ opportunities for on-campus or off-campus employment, allowing them to develop and enhance career readiness skills as mentors, tutors, and advisors for high school students within local school districts or nonprofit organizations, and students at WSMP participating institutions of higher education. The program aims to enhance students’ access to, success in, and completion of higher education.

Eligibility

Texas public, private, or independent institutions of higher education [except for theological or religious seminary institutions or institutions offering only professional or graduate degrees] may participate for the applicable award period.

Students must be classified as a Texas resident by the participating institution, be enrolled at least 1/2 time and in a plan leading to a degree or certification [excluding any program leading to ordination or licensure to preach for a religious sect, or to be a member of a religious order]. They must also be registered with Selective Service [or be exempt] and must not be a recipient of an athletic scholarship obligating them to play an intercollegiate sport during any semester the student is awarded WSMP funds. Student eligibility is managed and monitored by participating institutions.

Application Information

WSMP does not have an application process. This is an opt-in and out program every two years through the THECB financial aid division.

Interested institutions must complete:

  • An opt-in or out form for all financial aid programs inclusive of WSMP on a biennial basis, and
  • A participation agreement with the THECB, which encompasses all financial aid programming.

Institutions are proportionally allocated appropriations per a defined formula managed by financial aid and have 10 THECB business days to dispute the allocation total.

Once finalized, institutions may begin to implement WSMP.

The WSMP is authorized by TEC, Chapter 56, Subchapter E, Section 56.079. Rules establishing procedures to administer the program can be found in Title 19 of the TAC, Chapter 22, Subchapter G.
