Intent
The Texas Working Off-Campus: Reinforcing Knowledge & Skills (WORKS) Internship Program (TXWORKS) supports undergraduate public or private college students and Texas employers to develop and provide paid internship opportunities while exploring career options, developing, and improving career readiness, and strengthening workforce skills.
Eligibility
TXWORKS internships are available for Texas undergraduate college and university students who meet the following requirements:
- Are a resident of Texas.
- Have graduated from high school or received the equivalent of a high school diploma.
- High school students and current dual credit students are not permitted to participate in TXWORKS. Dual credit can count towards eligibility once a student has graduated.
- Currently or previously enrolled at an eligible Texas college or university for at least the number of hours required of a half-time student (6 hours or more) or within an internship course.
- Students that have earned a bachelor, graduate, or professional degree are not eligible to participate.
- Meet one or more of the following circumstances:
- Have completed a financial aid application – FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) or TASFA (Texas Application for State Financial Aid) for one of the academic periods within the last two years and have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) or Student Aid Index (SAI) of $0 – $20,000
- Eligible for a Pell grant and a Texas Educational Opportunity Grant (TEOG).
- Participated or actively part of the Texas Leadership Scholars Program
TXWORKS students may complete more than one TXWORKS internship so long as the internships are not concurrent. Students may participate in consecutive internship periods and up to three internships with the same employer.

Application Information
Interested Texas employers must complete electronic applications to provide their program eligibility qualifications for consideration to participate and receive funding for the TXWORKS internship program. Employers selected may begin program implementation once an active agreement with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) is in place, and may post, consider, offer, and hire eligible students with paid TXWORKS internships in at least two or more internship periods within the executed agreement period.
TXWORKS Employer Information
Texas students complete an eligibility form which confirms the ability to apply for a TXWORKS Internship. Once confirmed, they will receive an eligibility letter to provide, along with an official or unofficial transcript, to the TXWORKS employer for which they are applying for an internship position.

Rules and Regulations
TXWORKS is authorized by Texas Education Code, Chapter 56, Subchapter E-1, Section 56.0851 – 56.0857, funded in part by the state, and appropriated by Texas College Work-Study.
Impact
Students that are hired by participating TXWORKS employers can expect the following:
- Earn between $15-$40 per hour.
- Intern a minimum of 96 hours during an internship period.
- Complete internships with challenging, meaningful, real-work projects and tasks.
- Gain and strengthen career readiness competencies and skills to succeed in the workforce.
- Increase confidence to make future career decisions, build professionalism, and establish relationships.
As of 2024, TXWORKS has provided over $1,000,000 to over 40 employers in funding.
