Intent

Becoming a Texas Governor’s School (TGS) provides eligible Texas Institutions of Higher Education (IHE) the opportunity to prepare the next generation of changemakers. Awarded TGS programs offer a 3-week (consecutive) minimum summer residential program on campus for high achieving Texas high school students. TGS Summer programming supports the academic growth of Texas students by offering instruction in core curriculum areas such as mathematics and science, humanities, fine arts, and/or leadership and public policy.

Eligibility

Texas public senior college or university as defined in Texas Education Code, §61.003 are eligible to join the TGS, to provide services to high-achieving rising 11th and 12th Grade students, who are residents of Texas and can demonstrate intellectual curiosity about and a commitment to a rigorous and challenging academic program in the area(s) of a program offered by an eligible institution selected as a TGS School.

We are accepting applications from Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs).

Application Information

TGS is a competitive program for IHEs and requires the submittal of an application.

The agency accepts applications from IHEs on a rolling basis, but applicants should allow 60 days for a response regarding designation. While expedited requests will be considered, they cannot be guaranteed.

TGS is a summer school program that typically runs from late May to mid-August, in line with the TGS School’s summer calendar. The exact start and end dates will vary depending on the specific TGS program session for that year.

TGS was adopted November 2007, per 32 TexReg 8491, with TAC Title 19, Part 1, Chapter 5, Sub-Chapter E.

Impact

In 2024, TGS awarded one (1) designation to Texas A&M University, Bush School Youth Program.
