Intent
The program helps support the Texas goal of having 10% more first-year entering residency positions than Texas medical school graduates. The GME Expansion Program has supported the creation of 508 new first-year year residency positions between 2014 and 2023.
Eligibility
Eligible entities must be a nationally accredited post-Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or post-Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) program that prepares physicians for the independent practice of medicine in a specific specialty area, or a nationally accredited post-doctor of podiatric medicine (D.P.M) program that prepares podiatrists for independent practice in the specialty area of podiatry.

Application Information
- Applications must be submitted by the sponsoring institution of the eligible GME program.
- One application should be submitted per eligible GME program.
- Eligible programs must be maintaining previously funded GME program positions or intend to create new first-year residency positions in the state by establishing or expanding residency positions in a nationally accredited GME program.

Impact
The 83rd Texas Legislature, Regular Session, initiated several new programs to address the shortage of first-year residency positions. The initial effort, which started in FY 2014, appropriated $14 million in General Revenue to the THECB to administer grant programs that support efforts to increase the number of first-year residency positions. GME Expansion Program funding has supported the creation of 481 new first-year residency positions between 2014 and 2023. Funding has continued through FY 2024-2025 with an appropriation for the biennium of $233,100,000.
