Luke Schwartz of Tyler, Texas, was appointed to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board by Governor Greg Abbott in June 2024. He will serve as the board’s student representative through May 31, 2025.
Schwartz is a second-year medical student in the inaugural class at the University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine (UT-Tyler SOM). He graduated from Texas A&M University in 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and also holds an Associate of Science in Biology from Tyler Junior College.
Schwartz grew up outside of Tyler as the youngest of three boys in his family. As a child in rural East Texas, he played multiple sports and fell in love with all things outdoors. He also developed a passion for science and helping others in his community. At 17, he decided to merge these two passions and left home to become a medic in the military.
Schwartz has received multiple accolades throughout his educational and professional career, including, but not limited to, the Senior Merit Award at Texas A&M, Airman of the Year at the 136th Airlift Wing, and various medals including the Army Commendation Medal and Humanitarian Service Medal.
Currently, Schwartz remains highly active in his community and within UT-Tyler SOM. He serves as a representative on the Curriculum Oversight Committee, an ambassador for the school of medicine, and is a co-founder of multiple student organizations on campus. He is also a member of multiple professional organizations including the Texas Medical Association, the Smith County Medical Association, and the American College of Healthcare Executives. Most importantly, he can often be found volunteering his time at health fairs and free clinics, attempting to improve access to healthcare for all East Texans.
Schwartz currently lives in Tyler, Texas, and enjoys snowboarding, cooking, listening to live music, and spending as much time outdoors as possible. After graduation, he plans to pursue a residency in emergency medicine.
